Astrid Lindgren's World
-where fairytales come true
Astrid Lindgren´s World offers fantastic experiences for young and old. All those who´ve grown up with Astrid Lindgren´s stories will be familiar with the different environments created inside the park, and there are many opportunities for being drawn into the fairytales. Astrid Lindgren´s World is Sweden´s largest open air theatre with its many stages where specially written numbers based on Astrid Lindgren´s stories are performed daily. It´s a great experience to get to meet and play with Pippi, Karlsson, Emil or any of the other favourites. This is something the children may experience between the performances, when the actors are moving freely among the audience on the set or anywhere in the park.
News for 2013: The New Katthult
This year it is 50 years since Astrid Lindgren wrote Emil in Lönneberga, the first of three books about that little boy and his many pranks. In honour of the anniversary we´re creating a brand new setting for Emil and his family. New Katthult is situated near the beautiful Ekkullen, on 4,5 acres of glorious countryside. Here you can experience a farm, just as it would have been at the beginning of the 20th Century, take a stroll among the cornfields and the ancient oaks, enjoy the natural surroundings and look at the farm animals. You can also visit a small town environment with its market place, community hall and restaurant. And, of course you´ll get to meet Emil and the rest of the Svensson family. Just as in the rest of the park, the children are free to play to their heart´s content in New Katthult. Amongst other things there is a little stream that runs into a shallow lake, a play-barn, an earth cellar that you can crawl into and, last but not least, Emil´s own woodshed, complete with his collection of carved wooden figures.
Big experiences for small people
In Villekulla Cottage it´s of course Pippi who is the central attraction. Here you can watch her fight against pirates as well as the thieving pair, Thunder-Karlsson and Bloom. But, between the shows she is happy to meet with the children in the audience, who suddenly become participants instead of spectators. For more adventures, you go onto the nearby Matt´s Fort and Matt´s Forest, where you can discover what it´s like to be a prisoner in the robbers´ dungeon, test Noddle-Pete´s bed or see Hell´s Gap open up before you. And of course you´ll meet Ronja, Matt, Lovis, Borka, Undis and all the other robbers there as well.
Filling empty stomachs
If you haven´t brought your own picnic, there are several restaurants to choose from, all serving good wholesome food. We serve no prefabricated or fast food. Instead, we choose to use local produce and recipes and even have kroppkakor (a Småland speciality) on the menu. Naturally, we also serve both meatballs and pancakes. A mere 250 metres from the entrance there is a pleasant camping area with chalets. There are also many other accommodation alternatives nearby, as well as other attractions such as Astrid Lindgren´s childhood home, Näs.
